Full Gear Motor Cycle Training
Full Gear Northern Trial: Motorcycle Safety Program in Launceston's Northern Suburbs for 16-25 year old's.
City of Launceston delivered a trial of the Full Gear youth motorcycle safety program funded by a Community Road Safety Grant via the Road Safety Advisory Council.
The program was established at the Glenorchy City Council in 2017 to address the issue of unsafe, unlicensed and illegal riding and was successful in promoting behaviour change and compliance in young motorcycle riders aged 16 -25 years. In 2022, the Launceston program was delivered in Ravenswood and Rocherlea.
This was achieved by providing 16 participants with 6 x 1 hour road safety education sessions and a road safety campaign. In exchange for their time the course costs of the pre-learner motorcycle test ($705) and safety gear ($400) were covered by the Full Gear program.
The road safety campaign offered an opportunity for participants to become champions for road safety in their local suburb.
A core reason for the program's success was its partnership with Starting Point Neighbourhood House; and Northern Suburbs Community Centre who housed and supported the delivery of both programs. Both organisations provided two staff members for the program who co-facilitated sessions and gave wrap around support to participants, as well as 26-TEN staff to assist with literacy support.
The programs took place locally at the Neighbourhood House in Ravenswood and Rocherlea Community Shed, the support and knowledge of the local area and families was crucial in the delivery of this trial.
