The City of Launceston is excited to announce the return of Launceston's Carols by Candlelight event to City Park!

This free community event will take place between 6pm and 9pm on Sunday, 22 December. Gates open at 4pm.

Bring a picnic and enjoy a magical evening of entertainment featuring local performers, and a very special guest from the North Pole! 

The City of Launceston Carols by Candlelight 2024  event is proudly sponsored by McGrath and the official media partner for this event is The Examiner.

We encourage you to bring a blanket to sit on and enjoy a picnic with family and friends throughout the event.  Attendees are welcome to bring low line folding chairs, however larger camp chairs are not permitted.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of candles are allowed in City Park

Only battery-operated candles are allowed due to the damage wax candles can cause to the grass. Battery-operated candles will be available for purchase at the event. Please note this is a cashless event, so card payments are required.

What food options will be available?

A Rotary Club BBQ and coffee vans will be available in the park throughout the evening. Payment options vary between vendors, so please come prepared with card payments as cash may not be accepted.

We also invite you to bring along a picnic, or treat yourself to delicious options from the many local food businesses open on Sunday prior to the Carols.

Will there be coffee?

Yes, coffee vans will be on-site for your caffeine fix.

Are water stations available?

Water stations will be available throughout the park. We encourage attendees to bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated.

What kind of seating is permitted?

A designated area will be available for those with low line folding chairs and picnic blankets. Taller camp chairs are also welcome but will need to be set up in a designated area behind the low line chairs to ensure clear sightlines for everyone. Please be mindful of others when choosing your spot.



Is accessible seating available?

Yes, accessible seating and access will be provided. If you require assistance, our team will be happy to help on the day.

Are dogs allowed?

No, dogs are not permitted at the event, except for registered assistance animals.

Is this a smoke-free event?

Yes, Carols by Candlelight is a smoke-free event.

Is there parking available?

What parking options are available? A range of on-street and off-street car park options are available in Launceston. For more details, visit:

What time do the gates open?

This is a free event, and gates will open at 4.00pm.

Where do I go for lost property?

Lost property will be managed at the Information Tent. If you’ve misplaced something, head there for assistance.

What should I do if I lose my child?

A lost children’s area will also be located at the Rotunda in the middle of City Park this will be well signed. Please inform an City of Launceston staff member immediately if you need assistance.

Is first aid available?

Yes, First Aid services will be available on-site to handle any medical needs during the event.

Emergency Evacuation Information

In the Event of an Emergency

  • Please follow the instructions of the Area Warden and other event staff. They are trained to guide you to the nearest Emergency Evacuation Point safely.
  • Lost children will be escorted out of the park through Gate 6 and taken to the evacuation point at Terry White Chemmart on Brisbane Street. If you are separated from your child, please alert event staff immediately.
  • Announcements will be made via the public address system to inform attendees of evacuation procedures and next steps.

Your safety is our top priority, and we appreciate your cooperation in ensuring a smooth evacuation if required.

Will the event go ahead in all weather?

Carols by Candlelight will go ahead in all weather conditions unless extreme such as lightning. If the event has to be cancelled it will be communicated on the event Facebook post and City of Launceston website. Please note that the UV index on Sunday 22nd of December is extreme (11), please ensure you remember sunscreen and skin protection.
