Poplar Parade Road Reseal

The City of Launceston will be undertaking road surface resealing works on three sections of Poplar Parade from Thursday 12 September 2024 for approximately two weeks.

The sections to be resealed are:

  • Poplar Parade, from Opossum Road to Mountgarrett Court
  • Poplar Parade, from Piper Avenue to Dorothy Court
  • Poplar Parade, from Bluegum Road to Pinot Parade

Works will begin from Opossum Road and continue through to Pinot Parade.

Our contractors will endeavour to keep the active work site as compact as possible. We kindly ask that no vehicles be parked on the street near the work sites, from 7:30am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday, during construction.

Traffic management will be in place throughout the project, ensuring residential access is maintained and kerbside waste collection continues as usual. Metro will also continue servicing Poplar Parade.

During construction, one lane of traffic will remain open at all times where no detour is available. Please be aware that delays of up to 15 minutes may occur.

Please take care while moving through the work zone and obey traffic management to ensure both your safety and the safety of contractors.

Timing of works is subject to weather conditions.

Thank you for your support and understanding as we work to maintain our roads and infrastructure.

What is involved in a road reseal?

The road resealing process involves removing the asphalt surface through a method called "milling" and then applying a new layer of asphalt.

In some cases, we overlay the existing asphalt surface with a new layer.

Although it typically takes just a few days to reseal a road, the benefits are long-lasting, with surfaces lasting up to 20-30 years, depending on usage.

You may notice increased noise and vibration during construction.

Please allow for moderate traffic delays, localised detours and extra time to travel.

Why do we reseal roads?

The City of Launceston's road resealing program is a form of preventative maintenance. As a road surface ages, it becomes brittle and cracks, allowing water to seep into the base layers, which can cause potholes and pavement failures, eventually leading to costly and disruptive road reconstructions.

Resealing is a cost-effective and faster method of repairing roads before they require major intervention.

How are roads chosen to be resealed?

The City of Launceston's four-year road reseal program was developed using data from a recent road network condition assessment carried out by a professional third-party contractor.

Roads included in this program were prioritised based on their condition ratings, the age of the road assets, their location according to the road hierarchy, and asset grouping.
