Elizabeth Street Road Reseal

The City of Launceston will be undertaking road surface resealing works on Elizabeth Street, between St John Street and George Street, from Tuesday 11 March 2025 for a period of two nights.

These works will be undertaken between the hours of 7pm and 6am.

We kindly ask that no vehicles be parked on this section of Elizabeth Street from 6pm to 6am each night during construction.

A road closure will be in place, with traffic management to assist local traffic. Please be aware that there may be delays of up to 15 minutes.

Timing of works is subject to weather conditions.

What is involved in a road reseal?

The road resealing process involves removing the asphalt surface through a method called "milling" and then applying a new layer of asphalt.

In some cases, we overlay the existing asphalt surface with a new layer.

Although it typically takes just a few days to reseal a road, the benefits are long-lasting, with surfaces lasting up to 20-30 years, depending on usage.

Why do we reseal roads?

The City of Launceston's road resealing program is a form of preventative maintenance. As a road surface ages, it becomes brittle and cracks, allowing water to seep into the base layers, which can cause potholes and pavement failures, eventually leading to costly and disruptive road reconstructions.

Resealing is a cost-effective and faster method of repairing roads before they require major intervention.

How are roads chosen to be resealed?

The City of Launceston's four-year road reseal program was developed using data from a recent road network condition assessment carried out by a professional third-party contractor.

Roads included in this program were prioritised based on their condition ratings, the age of the road assets, their location according to the road hierarchy, and asset grouping.
