Wild weather in Launceston

The City of Launceston is actively monitoring conditions across the municipality, with a number of significant cold fronts crossing the Northern region this weekend.

With more wild weather on the way tonight and throughout tomorrow we have crews on standby ready to respond.

Combined with an unusually high tide in the kanamaluka / Tamar Estuary which you may notice tonight and tomorrow, we're expecting to see minor to moderate flooding in the North Esk River in coming days.

At this stage, we aren't projecting any significant concerns for Launceston. There is a small risk that low lying roads like Henry Street may be closed for a short time, depending on the conditions, in the days ahead.

We encourage residents to keep up to date with flood warnings and emergency information via the TasALERT and the Bureau of Meteorology websites.

With high winds forecast tonight and tomorrow, we may see trees downed across roads and pedestrian trails across our municipality.

Our crews will prioritise the opening of roads, which means we will clear trees from roads as soon as it is safe to do so, but may carry out other associated clean-up works at a later time.

It's also likely we'll see trees downed in our parks and reserves tonight and tomorrow, and we advise residents to avoid parks and reserves until weather conditions improve.

Across Northern Tasmania we may see roads being inundated by stormwater flooding. Please do not attempt to drive through floodwaters.

Have a safe weekend, and please continue to monitor updates at www.alert.tas.gov.au
