Street Art Festival to be scoped

The City of Launceston will explore the development of a Launceston Street Art Festival following a Notice of Motion from Mayor Matthew Garwood.
The proposed Launceston Street Art Festival event would be designed to showcase the work of street artists while also mitigating graffiti vandalism.
Mayor Garwood said he was hopeful the event could be staged in the 2024/25 financial year.
"There's a massive opportunity for Launceston in the street art space," Mayor Garwood said.
"We have an awesome network of city centre laneways and a lot of businesses and property owners who are interested in graffiti mitigation measures, and who are interested in street art projects for their buildings.
"What we also have in Northern Tasmania are some really talented street artists, including many the City of Launceston has worked with since I've stepped into the role of Mayor.
"In addition to a dedicated festival, we're also interested in potentially identifying a street art laneway which could act as a legal street art gallery, similar to the street art walls we have at Royal Park.
"These initiatives align with the Council's Public Art Strategy 2023-2031 and I'm hopeful we'll be able to get an event off the ground, partnering with artists, community groups, business and property owners.
"There's huge potential here and I'm excited to see where we land."
