City of Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten said he welcomed the state government's funding commitment for a proposed regional tennis facility in the North.
The State Government will today announce $2 million funding to support the redevelopment of the Launceston Regional Tennis Centre.
Mayor van Zetten said that while the Council had received a briefing from Tennis Australia representatives regarding the project, there has been no formal request for funding at this stage.
"That said, now the State Government has made this generous commitment to tennis in the North of the State, we would expect a formal request in the not-too-distant future," Mayor van Zetten said.
"We welcome the opportunity to work with the other two tiers of government - both State and Federal - towards achieving the goal of what we believe will be a top class, national-standard tennis facility for Launceston."
Mayor van Zetten said the proposed $4 million facility will include new courts, as well as a community and events facility and would no doubt help grow the sport of tennis across Northern Tasmania now and into the future.
"The current facility does need to be upgraded to be a true regional facility and that's what this proposal is trying to achieve given its importance to the Northern Tasmanian region as a whole.
"It already hosts the Launceston Tennis International - an event that is growing in stature and attracts some of the best up-and-coming young stars on the international circuit. Having an upgraded facility in Launceston will undoubtedly assist in that event growing even further."
