Road safety projects to get underway

The City of Launceston has been successful in securing funding under the State Safer Rural Roads program to improve safety on four rural roads in the municipality.

The Council has received a total of $206,413 under the program, which aims to improve road safety outcomes in Tasmania by reducing the number of head-on and run-off-road crashes that occur on rural and regional roads. 

Projects funded in the Launceston municipality comprise:

Second River Road & Bangor Road - $100,000 

This safety project will involve new line marking, guide posts and signage.

North Lilydale Road - $44,000 

This project will involve the installation of a length of guard rail approximately 140 metres long on North Lilydale Road.

Patersonia Road - $10,000

This project will involve the installation of new guide posts and safety signage.

John Lees Drive/Windermere Road Intersection - $52,413

This project will involve the provision of a right turn lane in John Lees Drive and a central island in Windermere Road.

City of Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood said the Council hoped to begin work on the four safety projects this financial year.

"In Tasmania, approximately one-third of fatal and serious injury crashes occur on rural roads, with head-on and run-off-road crashes being the main crash types," Mayor Garwood said.

"The City of Launceston is really grateful to have secured this funding from the State Government and appreciates how important the State Safer Rural Roads program will be to our community.

"The projects we've submitted are aimed at improving safety for all road users on four rural roads in our municipality and we're hoping to see work underway this financial year."
