Riverbend Park flood gate closure exercise
Published on 31 January 2025
The City of Launceston will close the Taroona St entrance to Riverbend Park at 6am until midmorning this Monday, February 3, as part of a flood preparedness exercise.
Vehicle access in and out of Riverbend Park will be unavailable during this time, but the park will remain open to pedestrians. Alternate parking will be available on Lindsay St, as well as along Kings Wharf.
The gate will be assembled and reopened as quickly as possible early on Monday with the aim of minimising disruption to motorists and neighbouring businesses.
The Council has engaged with directly impacted businesses regarding the closure.
It's expected vehicle access into Riverbend Park will be available by mid-morning.
Launceston's flood levee defence system comprises more than 12km of earth and concrete flood levees, 19 floodgates, and a series of river level gauges in Northern river catchments.
The Council programs regular flood readiness and training exercises for its crews, including the closure of major flood gates like the Charles St Bridge and Taroona St every two years.
