Hundreds of Christmas decorations are being installed across Launceston's CBD as the City of Launceston prepares for the annual Lighting of the Christmas Tree in the Brisbane St Mall this Friday, November 29.
Launceston's iconic 11m-tall Christmas tree with 7000 individual decorative lights and 2000 baubles is currently being installed along with hundreds of additional hanging lights and decorations in the Brisbane St Mall.
The City of Launceston is adding even more decorations and activations to the city's festive season celebrations this year.
These include Civic Square festoon lights and baubles, along with decorations constructed by The Shed Rocherlea and community groups. New banner systems in Civic Square, the Brisbane Street Mall, and St Johns Street which will see 100 additional street banners displayed across the CBD.
The Council is also receiving hundreds of Christmas-themed drawings from Northern Tasmanian children which will be turned into public decorations in the lead-up to Christmas as part of its Deck the Malls initiative, first launched last year.
City of Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood said the Lighting of the Christmas Tree next Friday was shaping up to be the biggest and best yet.
"The Lighting of the Christmas Tree is hands down the most popular family event in the city centre each year, and is a staple for thousands of Launceston residents," Mayor Garwood said.
"Each year we review the event to see what we can learn to improve it for next time, and we'll be implementing some learnings from last year to make this event even better. "What I love about the Lighting of the Christmas Tree is that it's an event where the spirit of our community shines through."
This year's event will feature face painting, live music, community performances, and a special visit from Santa Claus.
The event will run from 6pm to 9pm this Friday, November 29, with the lighting of the tree expected to take place at approximately 8.30pm.
