Launceston residents of all ages are invited to a kite flying day event at Newnham this Sunday to celebrate Children's Week and Seniors Week.

Coordinated by Community Together 7248 with support from the City of Launceston and Launceston City Mission, Let's Fly Together is a free community event which will be held at the football oval at the University of Tasmania's Newnham campus this Sunday, October 20, from 11am.

City of Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood said the event would feature a barbecue, face painting, raffles and more.

"Let's Fly Together is a really great way for the community to recognise both Children's Week and Seniors Week," Mayor Garwood said.

"The theme of Children's Week this year is 'connecting generations' and we're making that connection through kite strings.

"Let's Fly Together will also see the unveiling of a special community project dubbed the Flying Dragon of Dreams, which has been made possible with the help of four local primary schools.

"The dragon is made of recycled materials and ties in with the theme for Children's Week, 'children have a right to a safe and clean environment'.

"We hope lots of people will show up on the day, bring along their kites, and fill the sky with colour for this event.

"There will also be a limited number of kites available for sale on the day. "
