The City of Launceston wishes to advise prospective tenderers that it will be inviting tenders for a major upgrade of the Cataract Gorge play space in coming weeks.

The project will comprise two contract packages:

  • The civil works package, and;
  • The landscaping and play equipment installation package.

The tender for the civil works package will be publicly advertised on Saturday, July 7, 2018.

The tender for the landscaping and play equipment installation package will be advertised soon after.

The civil works tender will involve the placement of fill material, construction of footpaths, installation of drainage pipes and manholes, and installation of stormwater and water services.

Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten said the Council was giving advanced notice of the upcoming tenders so that local construction companies could begin preparing their submissions now.

"This is a project the City of Launceston is eager to see underway quickly, as we want to ensure the project is completed well in advance of the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards which will be held in Launceston on Friday, March 1, 2019.

"The existing play area is very tired and due for replacement. This project seeks to deliver a more accessible, nature-based play area that is better able to withstand floods.

"It will see the existing play area directly in front of the cafe and public amenities transformed into a vibrant new nature-based play zone, featuring a water play zone, native plantings, boulders, tree trunks, a sand pit, and more.

"Importantly, the new play area would be built to the same level as the existing public amenities, meaning access to the site will be easier for parents, grandparents and people with disabilities.

"We're very grateful for the input people have had through both the public consultation process and the planning process for this project."
