The City of Launceston will tomorrow advertise a Development Application for a $30m upgrade of the Princess Theatre and Earl Arts Centre complex.

Last month the Council invited construction firms to be part of an Early Contractor Involvement process for the redevelopment, which the Council and Theatre North expect to see underway in 2026. City of Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood said the redevelopment was being designed by renowned architectural firm Lovell Chen, utilising feedback from theatre stakeholders.

"The advertising of the Development Application is the next step in this exciting project, which is based around internal upgrades to the Princess Theatre and Earl Arts Centre complex," Mayor Garwood said.

"The project aims to improve both the Princess Theatre and Earl Arts Centre for patrons, performers, hirers and staff by making the complex more accessible and compliant with contemporary building standards.

"The total seating capacity of the Earl Arts Centre will be increased, and its name will change to the Earl Street Theatre."

Theatre North General Manager Amanda Shepherd said it was exciting to see the project progressing to the Development Application stage.

"It has been great to work collaboratively with the Council and theatre community on this exciting redevelopment project, which will ensure the theatre complex remains fit for purpose for future generations," Ms Shepherd said.
