The City of Launceston will waive parking fees across more than 700 car parking spaces in three of its multistorey car parks over the next two weekends leading up to Christmas.

Parking will be free in the Paterson St East Car Park, Paterson St West Car Park, and Elizabeth St Car Park on Saturday December 14 and Sunday December 15, as well as Saturday December 21 and Sunday December 22.

City of Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood said the initiative was aimed at supporting CBD businesses and enhancing accessibility to the city in the lead-up to Christmas.

"We know there have been some difficult economic conditions across the country over the past year or so, and this initiative is designed to be a small assistance to Launceston residents who are getting their Christmas shopping wrapped up," Mayor Garwood said.

"It may only save people a couple of bucks, but that can be all the difference at this time of year.

"It's important that people understand the free parking only applies to the Paterson St East, Paterson St West and Elizabeth St multistorey car parks, and only over the next two weekends.

"I'm also expecting the free parking will be in high demand and that parking in these car parks is likely going to be at capacity while the initiative is active.

"That means if you're eager to nab a free spot, it will be important to get in early.

"This year we've installed new electronic signage outside these car parks so it's easy for motorists to see how many spaces are available in each as they're approaching."
