More than 70 new citizens from 17 countries will pledge their loyalty to Australia as part of Australia Day celebrations in Launceston tomorrow.
The City of Launceston will hold its Australia Day Awards and Citizenship Ceremony at the Albert Hall tomorrow, from 10am, welcoming 74 new Australian citizens.
The ceremony will be followed at 12.30pm by Music in the Park, featuring the City of Launceston RSL Band, and a community barbecue held in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Launceston. Music in the Park will continue on Sunday with The Fergusons, live in City Park from 12.30pm.
Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten said all were welcome to attend the citizenship and awards ceremony, and Music in the Park.
"It's a great opportunity come down to City Park, enjoy the music and attend the awards and citizenship ceremony, which is such a fantastic celebration," Mayor van Zetten said.
"The Australia Day Awards component of the ceremony also gives us the opportunity to recognise citizens and events that have made important contributions to our city.
"While there are obviously different opinions about the appropriateness of the date of Australia Day, and I think it's important to continue that discussion, this is the current date we have to celebrate everything great about Australia, and I believe we should do so.
"It's a great honour to welcome new citizens and to recognise outstanding achievers in our community, and all are welcome to attend."
