AFL extravaganza game at the University of Tasmania Stadium next month
Published on 15 September 2017
Some of the most recognisable names of Tasmanian and Victorian football from years past will join together for an AFL extravaganza at University Stadium in early October - all in the name of charity.
Tasmania will take on Victoria/All Stars at UTAS Stadium on Saturday, October 7 in the Relive the Rivalry match to raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy Tasmania.
Household names such as former Carlton half-back Ange Christou, Sydney utility Troy Luff, Darryl White, ex-Sydney star Michael O'Loughlin, Leon Davis and St Kilda livewire Stephen Milne will line up for the Victoria/All-Stars team, under the watchful eye of former Carlton great and North Launceston premiership coach David Rhys-Jones.
Former Footscray ruckman Robert Groenewegen will assume the assistant coaching duties alongside Rhys-Jones.
Former Hawthorn great Peter Hudson will coach the Tasmanian team, which includes such names as former high-flying Melbourne forward Russell Robertson, Ben Beams, Adrian Fletcher, Michael Gale, Sydney star Daryn Cresswell, former Hawthorn and Western Bulldog forward Paul Hudson, former Collingwood great Paul Williams, and ex Richmond goal-scoring star Matthew Richardson.
Last year's Relive The Rivalry match between the two teams went down to the wire at the North Hobart Oval, with Tasmania coming out on top by just eight points.
Following that match, $18,000 was raised for Muscular Dystrophy Tasmania.
This year's game in Launceston will feature two curtain-raiser matches.
From 1.30pm, the Glenorchy under-16s will take on a representative team from the North-Eastern Football Union.
From 3.30pm, the women will have their chance to showcase their talents with the North-West women's premiers Latrobe taking on the runners-up of the women's Northern competition, Evandale.
Kick-off for the main match is set down for 5.30pm.
As special guests, two rising stars of the AFL - Melbourne's Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver - will be at the game signing autographs, having a kick with the kids and having their photos taken with the young fans.
Admission is just $10 for adults, $5 concession, and children under-12 $2.
All money raised from the game will go to Muscular Dystrophy Tasmania.
