Road Safety Centre Mural — Expressions of Interest

Artist call out

The City of Launceston is seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI) from Tasmanian-based artist(s) to design and implement a mural on the internal wall of the Launceston Road Safety Centre (RSC).

Project Overview:

Guided by the City's Public Art Strategy 2023 - 2031, this project is seeking the services of a suitably experienced Tasmanian-based artist(s) to design and implement a mural on the internal wall of the Launceston Road Safety Centre (RSC).

Up to three (3) artists will be selected to develop a Concept Design for which they will be paid $1000 each, after which only one concept will be selected for development and implementation. This EOI, the Road Safety Centre Mural EOI, provides the project context and the objectives and requirements of the proposed artwork.

Expressions of Interest (EOI) for this project closes at 4:00pm on Friday, 27 September 2024.

Background:

Originally constructed in a disused city water reservoir dating from approximately 1894, the RSC was transformed in 1980 to become a unique play area for children to celebrate birthdays, parties, training days, and barbeques.

Following extensive redevelopment and repairs to the underlying structure the site is now undergoing final fit out of the internal layout. Upon completion, the facility will return to use as a contemporary educational RSC and provide a simulated road and traffic layout, including pedestrian and bike pathways and automated intersections.

The proposed artwork design will provide a memorable connection to the newly installed play equipment, while celebrating and paying homage to the original facility via incorporation of key elements of the original design, including the ‘town’ themed mural around the internal perimeter wall.

The mural is intended to:

  • Reinterpret the themes and approach of the original centre mural in a fresh way
  • Create an interactive link to the surrounding play equipment, which includes a service station, café, fire truck, ticket booth and stage
  • Provide an inspiring and colourful backdrop to the space;
  • Contribute to the uniqueness of the centre.
