Launceston Heritage List Review
City of Launceston is reviewing the municipality Local Heritage List to ensure that we retain the unique look and feel of the place we call home. As Australia's third oldest major city, we hold some of our nation's oldest buildings, historical archaeology, streetscapes, and planted trees.
We are custodians of our past and present environment. Recognising and protecting Launceston's heritage is part of respecting and caring for the places and values of importance to our community.
Heritage List Review Explained
What is local heritage listing?
Heritage listing plays an important role in ensuring we retain our city's character and community's sense of place. The heritage protection system exists to conserve, manage, promote and celebrate our heritage.
The City of Launceston maintains a register of significant historic heritage places at a local level; as these places have particular local significance for our city.
What amendments are being proposed?
The City of Launceston seeks to introduce individual properties, archaeological sites and significant trees of heritage significance to our local heritage list, in addition to amendments of existing listings and removals of any listings no longer considered significant.
In addition, City of Launceston will include several new heritage precincts to our city, capturing groups of houses or streetscapes, significant for their collective value.
I received a letter in the mail, what does that mean?
The City of Launceston is engaging owners of properties that have been identified as having special and important cultural value and meaning within our municipality.
Through the initial consultation period, property owners will receive a letter to advise them that their property has been identified and is being considered for addition, removal or amendment to the local heritage list.
Why is my property proposed for local heritage listing?
In most cases, the reasons for a property to be heritage listed, are the same reasons you also value and love your property. Local heritage is assessed against significance criteria to determine a property's cultural value. These criteria include local history, creative or technical achievement, class of building or place, aesthetic characteristics, and association with a particular community or cultural group, or person or groups of persons, of importance to the municipality.
How do I nominate a place for local heritage listing?
Anyone can nominate a building, precinct, archaeological site, or significant tree for heritage listing. Please fill in the nomination form below, and our Heritage Team will review your submission for potential local listing.
