Heritage Skills Grant: Practical Building Conservation
The City of Launceston, with support from the Heritage Advisory Committee (HAC), maintain a strong commitment to the development and retention of heritage trades and skills within Tasmania.
As such, we are offering a Heritage Skills Grant for two local tradespeople to participate in the Longford Academy Autumn School: Introduction to Practical Building Conservation between Monday, 5 May, and Saturday, 10 May, 2025.
This six-day course introduces participants to the practical aspects of building conservation. Topics covered include paint stripping, dealing with damp and extracting salts, lime-based materials (mortars, plasters and limewashes), diagnosing timber decay and repair needs, roofing and metals. Site inspections and practical activities are reinforced by theory sessions and discussions.

The Autumn course is for all those involved in building conservation (whether specifiers or those who are hands-on) who want some practical and theoretical exposure to a range of topics that they’re likely to come across in their normal work. The Autumn course provides a good introduction to anyone wanting to learn about looking after older buildings.
